New EU customs regulations may affect your parcel.

2026-07-01 08:03

From 1 July 2026, new EU customs rules will come into effect, impacting Danish consumers who shop online from webshops outside the EU.

In the future, customs duties must be paid on all parcels sent from countries outside the EU. For parcels with a value of up to EUR 150, a flat customs duty of EUR 3 (approx. DKK 22) will be charged per item category.

If a parcel contains multiple types of goods, the customs duty will be charged per item category. For example, a parcel containing cotton socks and wool sweaters will be treated as separate item categories, resulting in multiple customs charges.

For shipments with a value above EUR 150, existing customs rates will continue to apply.

Customs duties must be collected at checkout. Under the new EU rules, it is the sender’s responsibility to ensure that both customs duties and VAT are paid when the order is placed. If only VAT is paid and customs duties are not, the parcel will be returned to the sender.

If neither customs duties nor VAT are paid at the time of purchase, the recipient will receive a request for payment (including an administrative fee from PostNord) before the parcel can be delivered.

What does this mean for you?

- A fixed customs duty of EUR 3 per item category will apply to parcels valued up to EUR 150

- If VAT is paid at checkout, customs duties must also be paid

- If no customs duties or VAT are paid, you will receive a payment request before delivery

- Parcels valued above EUR 150 follow existing customs rules

- Customs duties are generally not refunded when returning goods

- Private gifts valued below EUR 45 are exempt from customs duties and VAT, if correctly declared as gifts
